Born 1982 in Hyogo Pref. He has been working as an illustrator in Tokyo since 2008.
Like many children in Japan, Yasunari grew up in the manga culture that surrounded him as a child. Some of his first memories are of spontaneously beginning to draw in the manga style. While he was inspired by many of the great manga artists, such as Akira Toriyama, Yasunari received the largest influence of all from the drawing style of Takehiko Inoue, in which dynamic composition exists alongside a beautifully tranquil, monochromatic palette. With the aim of becoming a manga artist, Yasunari enrolled at Osaka University of Arts and began studying illustration. It was there that he first encountered portraits of women by Lautrec, Robert Heindel, and Rene Gruau that stirred his soul. Yasunari, too, gradually began producing chic fashion illustrations.
The influence of female portraits by those great masters and of Japanese manga comes through clearly in Yasunari's current style. Although his works depict European women and streetscapes, his use of black and bold interposition of "ma" (Japanese for "empty space") hint at manga and its origins in the Japanese traditions of pictorial expression. Thus, light and shadow, stillness and motion, and Japan and the West always coexist within Yasunari's works. As for his materials, he uses India ink (a traditional black color used in Japanese painting and calligraphy as well as Chinese landscape painting) and the g-pens used in manga. These also form a major part of the Far Eastern aspect that inhabits his work.
(However, he also uses materials such as other kinds of ink and acrylic upon request from clients.)
A fervent lover of British rock, Yasunari has also started drawing portraits of rock musicians like the Jam and Radiohead as a personal project.
