Profile
Born in 2001 in Saitama, Japan. Mesico graduated from the Department of Calligraphy in the Faculty of Literature at Daito Bunka University. Having studied Japanese calligraphy (shodō) since the age of eight, Mesico worked as a calligrapher writing goshuin for temples and shrines and ofuda talismans while at university. After graduating, Mesico received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award (First Prize) at a national calligraphy exhibition and also taught calligraphy at a high school.
While specializing in tensho (seal script) at university, Mesico became fascinated by its pictorial qualities and developed an interest in the relationship between written characters and visual art. Drawing on techniques cultivated through Japanese calligraphy, Mesico now explores forms of expression that combine written characters and illustration while moving beyond the traditional conventions of calligraphy.
